About Us
I became interested in the composting earthworms when an Australian TV programme "BEYOND 2000" was being shown on S.A.B.C.2 during 1994. After making enquiries to ‘BEYOND 2000" I then contacted the Sussex Municipality in the U.K. and obtained the biological name of these Tiger worms as EISENIA FETIDA. These earthworms are native to Europe and the only place where I could buy them from was at an university in South Africa who was doing over a number of years, intensive studies on these earthworms. I've purchased a number of batches of earthworms from them in June 1995 and during the following 13 years managed to breed them successfully, thereby creating fertile top-soil in my garden to grow my own vegetables and herbs and fruit trees using only their vermi-compost and worm-tea to fertilized my beds.
I am still giving talks to Garden Clubs and schools. I came second during July 1997 in a competition ran by the 'Daily News' and 'Kwazulu-Natal Recycling Forum', to create environmental awareness for the public, by utilizing these worms to reduce bio-waste and create vermi-compost and "worm-tea". I also became one of the first 12 winners in a national competition ran by S.A. Gardening, Nedbank and WWF and received "The Green Trust S.A. Gardening Eco-Gardener of the Month Award during November 2005. In June 2008 I received a Certificate of Recognition", plus the Tessa Palmer Trophy "for an outstanding contribution to the implementation of a cleaner environment" by the Association of clean communities - 'Keep eThekwini Beautiful'.
I have two species of these exotic composting earthworms, namely Tiger worms = Eisenia Fetida and the Reds = Lumbricus rubellus, which are used worldwide as THE Composting Earthworms to reduce bio-waste in controlled surroundings to turn it into vermi-compost. These worms do not cross-breed with any other type of indigenous earthworms and will not harm the environment.
*The worm castings or vermi-compost contain more nutrients than ordinary topsoil and have the following nutrient values:
7 times the available phosphorous
6 times the available nitrogen
3 times the available magnesium
2 times the available carbon
1.5 times the available calcium
The "worm tea" is rich in bacteria which benefits poor soil lacking the necessary bacteria, due to the overuse of chemical fertilizers.
When purchasing a worm bin, full instructions will be given, as well as a free demonstration when visiting my worm farm here in Pinetown.
My mission is to try and create a GREENER KwaZulu-Natal and to encourage Eco-Tourists to visit this Province, especially with 2010 around the corner!
POEM: ADOPT A TREE
Seeing the barren countryside below
No more trees to let me breathe free
No tree roots to trap rainwater
Now rushing off to the sea
Please help me to develop 'ADOPT A TREE'
To replace those aliens chopped down
In the name of job creation
Apparently to let the streams run free.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide
And release oxygen into the air
Preventing Global Warming
And the Greenhouse Effect.
I've got Yellowwood trees galore
To be planted out on the forest floor
Little saplings to be cared for
Let me place one at your door.
